Hello everyone,
I’m new to this forum and am seeking information and advice. I have a model 1894, 30-30, serial #328081, take-down model with a round barrel approximately 16+ inches. It has approximately 50% or more blueing, and is in good working condition. It has a flip up rear peep site, although I’m uncertain if this is original. Unfortunately, a previous owner mounted a recoil pad on it. My desire is to return this fine old rifle to original as much as possible/practical. I want to start with getting an original butt plate. I don’t know if this gun had a crescent or straight butt plate. According to the serial number, it was manufactured in 1906. Where may I find details and pictures of what this rifle likely looked like new? All your thoughts and advice are appreciated. Thanks.
You can get the “as built” configuration information from the Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) records office (for a fee). I suspect you will find that the barrel was at least several inches longer than 16″. If it originally had a crescent butt plate, you will need to replace the entire butt stock if it now has a recoil pad on it.

In most cases this would be true. But once I had the luck of buying a gun with an added recoil pad that the curvature of the stock had not been flattened. I was able to find a buttplate and install it. Or Hopefully it letters with a shotgun butt.
