Happens to be pistol grip style.  I know I’ve had it off before – a good number of years I suppose.  It stuck now (yes I have the tang screw out).  I recall we had a thread on this very topic in recent years. Anyone know where it is?  And short of that, what advice is out there on how to accomplish this with as little risk as possible?

Surprising you’re having this trouble if it was previously removed–even if that was 30 yrs ago.  I always start by rapping along both sides of the tang with a plastic mallet using a thick piece of leather to prevent damage to wood.  Once stock starts to move, continuing the rapping may “walk” it down the tang.

I was surprised too.  Particularly because it was a lot less than 30 years ago that I had the stock off.

All I can say is I really don’t want to damage it.

Got the stock off – thanks Clarence.

My final task it to get the rear screw in the mainspring (that holds it to the tang).  Some sort of compression.  Best alternative to a vice grips plier?

I use a small C clamp to pull the spring flat but you probably figured that out.
