Can anyone post a few pictures of a Redfield #70 receiver sight base that is correct for the 1886 and m71 ? I am looking at one that has the F marking but not the FH thqt I expect from looking at a fit chart . It also is not totally flat on the back like a ’94 or’92 sight and has a beveled ridge at the top like some shotgun and Remington 14 and 141 sights have. Any help is appreciated , Thanks.

Hello, Ed.
Here are a few photos of my Model 71 which has a Redfield sight. There are no markings on the sight so I can’t say for sure it’s a Redfield #70 but you’ll know from the photos.
I saw my first Model 71 in the Yukon and I bought one as soon as I could. I use if for moose. The sight came with the gun. It’s an absolutely excellent sight.
“Redfield” is stamped on the elevator but there are no visible markings on the base. The base is flat to mount on a flat-sided receiver and it has a beveled ridge that fits the contour of the Model 71 receiver top. Clearly, it was made to fit the Model 71.
Is this the sight you’re looking for? I can take it off the gun and take another photo if you need a better look.

Ed, this pic shows the beveled lip a little better.

Pete,
It is a No. 70, and it should have an “F” code marking on it somewhere.
In my ongoing research of the Model 71, I have thus far found (120) rifles with a Redfield No. 70 or No. 80 receiver sight mounted on them, nearly all of them are pre-WW II rifles. It is my belief that prior to Winchester adopting the Lyman No. 56 receiver sight as a standard cataloged item (n the year 1948), they installed Redfield sights on special order from the customer.
Do I have your Model 71 documented in the survey?

Hi, Bert. Nice to meet you. I thought I’d better re-read your Summer 2021 issue on the Model 71 before I wrote you back. Nice article!
No, I don’t see the “F” code on the Redfield base. I removed the yardage indicator plate, expecting that it would be behind, but not so. It must be on the back side. I’m a little reluctant to remove the sight as I would have to sight-in the rifle all over. I can, though, if it’s an issue that needs to be settled.
No, I don’t think you have a record of this rifle. The serial number is 25459. It’s a standard sporting rifle with 24-inch barrel, non-checkered stock and no sling studs. It has a crowned muzzle, a Type 1 barrel address and a checkered hammer.
I don’t know if the Redfield sight was a special order or an after-market add-on. I bought the rifle from Blake Graham, who was a member of a hunt camp that I had to paddle past to get to ours. Blake always wanted to see what I was shooting that year and he always wanted to show me his Model 71. When Black retired from hunting in 1991, he said he wanted to sell it to me so he’d know it would always be wandering the hills around Big Trout. He’d be glad to know that it still is.
Blake didn’t buy this rifle new. He bought it from a friend’s estate much earlier. When Blake turned the rifle over to me, he asked if I wanted the Redfield sight that came with it. Blake preferred an open barrel sight but when I saw the Redfield, of course I said yes.
If there’s anything else you’d like to know about the rifle for your records, let me know.
Nice to meet you, Bert. All the best,

Thanks for the pictures and info . Been trying to post for several days but couldn’t get it to work . Bert got the problem fixed for me though. I didn’t get the sight before someone else got it but the info will help on the next one I see . This sight had an F on the rear but also had two other letters stamped in two other spots which had me throwed. I expected the FH listed in the old catalog I looked it up in but it only had the F despite having the hunter knobs,
