Here’s an A5 on ebay right now.
Rear mount incorrect–a later Lyman. Probably won’t stop it from bringing close to a grand, because the people buying most of them are building FAKE sniper ’03s.
Threedfly, I highly suspect that the marks on the upper right side of the tang have to do with the special order sight. I figured that your rifle would have marks in precisely this location for the reason stated. I’ve seen marks in this location before when the only reasonable conclusion had to do with special sights that were on the rifle. In fact, it was around a year back on this forum, when a similar situation occurred with marks in this location and special order sights, to include, my comments to this end.

James,
Thank you for your observations, I am hoping these marks are indeed indicative of the special order sights/scope mounts.

I see scope rings on that one and I sent a question off to the seller to see if they are indeed OFFSET rings/mounts.
Not knowing what I am looking at I am hoping that this scope would have been exactly what would have been install on my rifle from the factory.

Good observation….thanks for pointing that out.
Looks like I would have heavy competition if I were to pursue that one, so I’ll just sit back and see where it goes at the end of the auction.

You’re welcome, although I can’t say with any certainty that it is the case, but it appears to be something that could easily be checked out, since some other members have rifles with special order sights.
Speaking about off set mounts, there was a set on GunBroker a few days back, but I don’t think they had the patent pending stamp on them.

Competition for these is always heavy, because the sniper-nuts don’t sweat the small stuff, like originality; after all, they’re buying them to put on FAKES.

These don’t ordinarily bring as much as standard mounts, because…who wants ’em? I’d just buy a scope with mounts attached, because there’s no factory record (I presume) to verify how it was ordered.

I meant to say off set adapters instead of mounts. I agree with just buying an A5 scope.

I would consider it a deluxe rather than a semi-deluxe. Great looking rifle. You can tell it came with the scope because of the proof location.Bob
Please help me out here. Could anybody tell me what the grades were of these pistol grip rifles? I’ve seen three different styles? Which one is called Deluxe, Semi-Deluxe and whatever the 3rd version without checkering is called? Standard grade Pistol Grip? If a rifle was ordered in a pistol grip style, did it have any designation other than just pistol grip?
Pistol grips could be plain grain wood with no checkering (plain pistol grip) , plain grain wood with checkering (semi deluxe), fancy wood with checkering (deluxe) in collector terms. A letter would say pistol grip, pistol grip checkered, or pistol grip, fancy and checkered.
To add to what Chuck has stated;
1. Plain Pistol Grip (plain walnut and not checkered)
2. Plain Pistol Grip checkered (I-pattern)
3. Pistol Grip checkered (usually 2X w/H-pattern)
4. Fancy Pistol Grip checkered (usually 3X w/H-pattern)
Options 1 & 2 are classified as “semi-deluxe”, but this term was not used by Winchester. Further, these options were special order only.
Options 3 & 4 are classified as “Special” or “Fancy” and Winchester used both of those descriptions (names) in their catalogs. This option was not a special order, as it was a regular cataloged variation. Many collectors mistakenly believe that all “Fancy” or “Special” Sporting Rifles were special order, and that is not an accurate assumption.
