Did Winchester make the 1892 in either 32.20 or 38.40 in a “short rifle” (20″ Octagon Barrel) configuration?  In particular, could this have been done sometime during the first year of production (4 digit serial) ?

Ed,

The answer is Yes to both of your questions. That stated, you should verify the configuration of said rifle by contacting the Cody Firearms Museum records office and obtaining a factory letter or research sheet (if you are a member).
