Hello all,

The rifle is obviously “restored” as noted in the auction description but the real rub is the barrel address stamp style on the gun.  The last #2 Style address stamp which I have seen is in the 246600 range.  Some 151,000 rifles and three years earlier.  Just be real careful of this one.  https://www.proxibid.com/Firearms-Military-Artifacts/Firearms/C-WINCHESTER-MODEL-1892-TRAPPER-SADDLE-RING-CARBINE/lotInformation/56986114

Well. the condition is described as such:  “CONDITION: Excellent as restored with 95% reapplied finishes remaining. Wood has been lightly sanded, showing little wear. Bore is fine showing light abrasions. Action is tight.”

SOOOOOO…

This is nothing but a shooter.  If the description didn’t state that it is completely redone, the photographs give many indications that it is refinished–some pitting with bluing within, “soft” edges, softened lettering, the bluing hue isn’t quite right, etc.

The pre-auction estimate of $3,000 to $5,000 is way too high, IMHO, for a shooter grade trapper.  The barrel, being refinished, should warrant no additional money, especially since it is a completely refinished gun to begin with, especially since the refinish is rather amateur.  Or, conversely, is there anyone out there who would pay more for this one, as refinished, because it is a trapper?  If it is worth anything extra, it would be the extra value of the refinished 16″ barrel as a part, and not the gun as a whole.

When something like this is presented, I just move on.  But that’s just me, perhaps.  Did I mention I really dislike anything that is refinished?

I’m thinking the hammer price will fall in the estimate range.  Not that I think it is worth that.  I find there’s a lot to not like about that piece.  Also given Michael’s information, there’s really no chance this is a gun that originally shipped in this configuration and was later refinished.  It’s been put together.  Anyone think the barrel was originally 16 inches?

And wow, 26% internet premium.  And then sales tax on top of that?  And possibly packing, shipping and transfer fee on top of that?
