I’ve only seen one other. See last two photos. I have a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Hydro-Coil stock that appears new and may still work. The stock is walnut but has a plastic like finish that matches the hydro-coil. You can see residue form the finish inside the stock. I bought the stock on ebay from a guy living in Connecticut. It came from his dad’s estate and he worked for Winchester. I did not pay much for the stock. Any information? Thanks

Hi Parkerposy-
I’ve not found much about them, but they apparently do exist. An R&D project, never used on a production Model 70. Most likely the Hydrocoil concept was better suited to Model 12 trap guns, as Winchester did market some of those in the 1960s.
The only mention I’ve found of Hydrocoil stocks for the M70 is in an article written by John and Joe Vaninetti on R&D Model 70s that appeared in the January 1990 issue of The Gun Report. Several prototypes from their collection were discussed, but one small paragraph discussed the Hydrocoil stock. I will post relevant clips from the article here.
That’s all I’ve got on them… Your stock would be a pretty neat artifact to have!!!

Thank You, Lou,
That is great information. Clearly the photos you posted were still in the development stage and my stock appears to be the end product. Not a great idea for a model 70. While a skeet or trap model 12 could be shot 100s of times in a day or weekend. Most deer hunters shoot 5 shots a year and mostly to sight in their guns.
