I am in need of help with a Post 64 Target M70 serial number. Rifle is 30/06 with 24″ heavy barrel and has the appropriate clip slotted receiver. Everything I have been able to find shows 1964 production serial numbers were 700000 to 740599 and 1965 starting  with 809177. My SN is 803xxx. Logic says it should be a 1964 receiver but the published serial number dates don’t cover it.

If anyone can shed any light on this I would greatly appreciate it

The serial number range you posted for 1964 and 1965 is incorrect. Per Roger Rule’s superb reference book, the year 1964 included serial numbers 700000 – 757180, and 1965 was 757181 – 818500. That would mark your Model 70 a late 1965 production rifle.
