Hugh,
First… always post a complete serial number when asking questions here on the WACA website forums.
If the serial number is 922500, it was not manufactured in the year 1923. Instead, it was manufactured in the latter part of the year 1920. Accordingly, the markings on the barrel you describe appear to be correct.
In the condition you describe, it should be priced in the neighborhood of $550.

sn 922517
all the reference guides show a 1923 date of manufacture
I have never seen an early Winchester with a good barrel and this level of finish go for anything like $550
perhaps others have a different view of the value; I have not yet purchased it as Gander has a very high price on it. Was trying to get an idea of a price I might negotiate to.

Hugh,
99% of all the many reference guides have erroneous data in them for Winchester daters of manufacture. If you have doubts about what I am telling you, contact the Cody Firearms Museum research office (they have the original Winchester serialization records). For a $40 fee, they will provide you with an official document that has the exact date of manufacture.
In regards to your doubt about the value number I stated, you stated that it has little or no finish left on the receiver frame (with minor rust), the saddle ring is missing, and the original Carbine ladder rear sight is missing… all of which are value deductions. Most knowledgeable Winchester collectors would not be interested in buying it even at just $500. Gander Mountain typically overprices their limited stock of classic firearms.
