I sort of alluded to this in another thread, but it got buried in the original topic of the thread.
I have a 1979 edition of Madis’ Book. On page 332 is pictured an 1886 with a Calligraphic inscription dating from 1895. The firearm was, at that time, in the collection of Felix Bedlan. The inscription states, as follows:
“In the 94,000 series, this model 86 in .45-90 has a full magazine with octagon barrel, pistol grip and check(er)ing. Lyman front, rear and tang sights and silver trim. Extra fancy walnut and a dated inscription are very rare features on any Winchester.” The inscription is difficult to completely read, as the calligraphic nature makes true interpretation difficult, but is somewhat as follows: Fred R Thoisington 1895 FROM T.M.F.
When I first read this book at age 16, George Madis was THE MAN, and what he said was gospel. Now we all know the problems with Madis’ data and claims. Of course, a factory letter would lend much more credence to this inscription, but, now that I look at it, I think it is definitely period (e.g., from 1895), but I question if it is even factory original. What do you think?
