Do the case coloring on this rifle for sale on GB look original to you?? They look pretty good, but have never seen that vintage rifle in that condition with such good case. Always out to learn something. Thanks, Peter

The case hardening doesn’t look quite right to me.  It seems like there is too much contrast in the colors and the color lines are very distinct – more distinct than I have seen before on factory case hardening.  It also looks like the wear on the lever is not consistent the amount of finish wear on the rest of the rifle.  It is possible the lever has been refinished, or it could even be that the lever was replaced at some point.  It also might be that the lever is original, but it doesn’t look quite right to my eye.  I may feel different if I saw it in person.

Well, it looks original to me.

Go to the Home Page of this site,

and take a look at the Model 94 Rifle, and compare.

There is no comparison between the rifle on the home page and this rifle in my opinion. The home page rifle is mint with very little to no wear, so should have the case it has. Some one has taken very good care of it, and kept it out of the sun also. The rifle in the auction looks way to worn to have that much, or as nice of case as it has. It is also missing the reds and oranges of the original cased rifle, which I have been told, are only found with original case colors. It was my understanding that the reds and oranges only come from the very hot temperatures, and most are afraid to get metals that hot these days because of cracking and breaks that so often occur. Just my opinion of course. Peter

The rifle on the home page is a mint example, without any finish wear whatsoever.  The rifle being discussed here can’t be compared with that particular rifle.

The colors of case hardened parts will fade and wear with the rest of the rifle.  You won’t have an original rifle with notable bluing wear and still vivid looking colors in the case hardening.  It just won’t happen.

Here’s what authentic wear looks like…

Here is what it should look like.

Hi everyone, this is my rifle and I have shared it previously via photos with Bert H. and I believe also Michael (Twobit) who I have been corresponding with for years and believe are forum members here.  Neither expressed concern to me around the authenticity of this rifle.   I’ve been collecting for about 10 years and have been very careful to not misrepresent any item from my collection.  My photos may not be the best but this is an excellent rifle that in person looks very close to brand new….but not in a “fake” way.  The bore condition is excellent as is the original old style factory blue.  There is not much wear on this rifle other than from what I assume is being banged around in a closet or gun safe for many years from the original owner(s) before I purchased this from an elderly “off grid” collector in Pennsylvania who owns/has owned over 1600 vintage rifles.  His collection includes Kentucky Rifles worth in excess of $250,0000 each, a Colt Single action from Custer’s last stand, and an original 1911 that is 100% condition to name just a few items.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask but this is not a scam rifle.  Thank you.

New pics uploaded with more natural lighting that isn’t washing out my pics.  Hopefully now it will be evident that this is an 80% original blue with factory case colors Winchester 1892.  Thanks for the comments.  You guys probably just saved me a couple thousand bucks.

Thanks for the comments and for the newly added photos.  For whatever reason, these new photos look much more natural.  Not sure why the first images looked so vividly colored, but the newly added ones look just at they should.

In my experience, photos can be influenced by everything from lighting, to the way a digital camera processes the image, to the way a given monitor displays color.  Making absolute judgement from a photo alone is probably unwise, which is why i said…

Regardless, the new photos do look right to me, and probably will look better to prospective/critical buyers as well.

As a pretty serious photographer I must add that it is ALL ABOUT the light!!  The variation in the color and contrast in a photo is directly related to the light source type (or color temperature) that is used.  Our eyes see White light but camera sensors and film see the difference color temperatures and this strongly influences what will be reproduced in an image.  This is most obvious when a camera set for “open sunlight” is used indoors with incandescent light bulbs lighting the scene and resulting in a very yellow or warm look to the image.  There is a pretty extensive discussion here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature
