I just acquired this 1894. The serial number dates it 1920. The gun appears to me to be all original. the fit of the wood is perfect. The receiver, buttplate, and nosecap are all brown while the barrel maintains most of it’s blue. My questions are as follows. Are the barrel markings correct for 1920? The main question is the barrel length. It measures 21 and 3/4 inches. I can see no sign it was cut or set back. If it was cut it would to have been a 26 inch barrel to get rid of the original magazine tube hanger dovetail. It had a very new replacement front sight which I replaced with the one pictured. The current sight is a perfect tight fit. As you can see the sight dovetail was cut with a mill. The setback for the magazine tube hanger dovetail matches another 94 rifle I have. The muzzle looks correct and untouched as well. Could this have been built this way as a special order?
THIS ALL STARTED WITH JUST ONE GUN!
The barrel & magazine has been cut short. The dovetails were cut before the barrel was blued.

Old Guns,
The Model 1894 was made with a standard 26 inch barrel. So yes, it is very easy to lop off for inches and make it into a +/- 22 inch gun. On an original 22 inch rifle the rear sight dovetail would be a bit closer to the receiver in order to have a longer sight length.

Michael,If the rear sight is set back the 1″, would it also have to have the 1″ shorter forend? RDB
Roger,
One of our members did a survey of Model 1894 short rifles and I think his finding were that for 22 inch gun they may or may not have a shorter fore end. But I would definitely defer to him.
