I’m sure you experts can help. Not sure if it is a re-barrel or custom order.PXL_20250901_151541355.jpgImage Enlarger

Unusual configuration for a 1920 made 1892. It has what I think Madis called a 20″ rapid taper barrel, two-leaf folding rear, a lyman middlefield peep. I’ve attached photos

That looks like a standard carbine configuration unless I’m missing something.

It’s the tapered barrel that has me confused. Madis states that the ‘lightened’ barrel came later than 1920. So my question is special order or re-barrel.
I bought it for it’s nearly pristine bore.

Of course, Cody only has SNA for this serial number range.

Madis was unfortunately (and frequently) not correct about his dates of manufacture and the corresponding dates that Winchester made production changes to the various models.

Thank you, Bert. I was working from his book, mostly from page 393: “Carbines in caliber 32-20 and 25-20 have more rapidly tapering barrels than the carbines in 38-40 or 44-40 caliber.”  So I thought, okay it must be a special order.

But, then he says on page 394: “Lightweight rifles, having twenty-two inch rapidly tapering barrels, were made near the end of the 1892 rifle production…” I realize now he was talking rifles here. I think that lead to my confusion.

I have a 1912 manufactured 1892 rifle in 25-20 with 24″ round barrel and the difference is substantial. I apparently haven’t seen a 92 SRC before.

I guess the the first thing I should have done was search a simple search for 1892 Winchester SRC, rather than go to Madis. Plenty of pics and indeed standard src configuration. I did learn it was assigned a serial no. on 9/2/1920 from Cody. Great bore and it came with 150 rounds of factory ammo. You 25-20 lovers will appreciate that.

Good bore, tang sight and ammo, that’s my kind of Winchester! SRC is a nice bonus and an unusual configuration makes it even more interesting.

Good morning,

I first saw this rifle for auction in 2020 at Mikolajewski Auc.  As noted it is a standard Model 92 saddle ring carbine.  If you remove the folding peep sight the upper tang will be stamp as in the attached image.  Could you send me your images of your other 1892 so that I can make certain that I have it in my survey please?

Is the sporting rifle a full mag configuration?  Can I get a shot of the caliber stamp and barrel address stamp?  It is a new one for my survey!!

Thanks

Michael
