Doyle,
If it is a 1908 production gun, it is a Model “1892”.
A Nickel Steel barrel was provided when somebody special ordered a Model 1892 specifically made for Winchester’s High Velocity (WHV) cartridge. They are relatively rare.

Would a 1908 model 92 have a nickel steel barrel?
Hello Doyle,
Can you send me some photos of the rifle, the serial number, and details of the stamped writing on the gun? I should be able to tell you if the barrel is original or not. As Bert mentioned they are relatively rare on the Model 1892 rifles. [email protected]

Maybe this will help. Here are a couple of pictures of the “Nickel Steel” stamps on my 1892 25/20’s. Round barrel serial #400784. Octagon Barrel serial #623492. You may notice the different rear sight dovetail locations. The round barrel take-down is a 22″ short rifle and has the shorter fore end wood. RDB
