i recently purchased a model 54 that I liked and was told it was upgraded by Griffen and Howe. I posted some pictures on the Doublegun forum in the custom rifle section but have not recieved much of a response so far. I have joined this forum hoping to gain more knowledge.
I have takn some pictures of the 54 assembled as well as disassembled. I really like the rifle, but have been told that the rifle could not be a G&H upgrade as it is not marked with the company name.
The SN is 34048. I am curious if this rifle could have been a Winchester factory upgade. I am posting picture as well as describing what I have noted on this rifle. The stock is very well fitted and checkering is excellent quality. It has a steel grip cap, and a Hawkins leather faced pad. It does have. A G&H side scope mount ( patent pending ). It has permanently installed with fasteners and welding then machined. Vintage Ziess scope that is perfectly clear. Nice Lyman peep also installed.
A sling is installed attached to the rifle with quick release swivels and high quality studs attached to butt stock and forend. The forward attach point actually screws into a barrel band with machine threads. There is no rear sight or dovetail slot of a sight. It also has a 2” horn forend tip. 24” Nickel steel barrel.
I will attach pictures of the proof marks as well as all other markings I have found so far as soon as I figure out the way to do this. Thanks in advance for any help.
Phil

Not exactly what you were told–which was that a customer’s rifle sent in to be restocked & have a side-mount attached would not necessarily receive any G&H marking. Many of the outstanding custom gunsmiths working at that time could have done the stock work, but properly fitting the base of the side-mount was enough of a specialized job that it’s probable G&H did that much of the work at least.
Nevertheless, I don’t think most collectors of G&H guns (as I was several decades ago) would consider such a G&H re-work a “true” G&H. It’s value resides in the quality of the custom work, not its attribution to G&H or Winchester; and speculation about Winchester being involved is, with no factory records available to confirm the possibility, a dead end.
