Hi Everyone.  What a great forum, and thanks in advance for all the great information contained here!  I thought I’d introduce myself with a pic of my Winchester rifles.  Top to bottom:  Model 1873, 44-40, born in 1883.  Model 1894, 30wcf, born in 1908.  Model 1894 SRC, 30wcf, born in 1915.  And on the bottom, the first rifle I ever bought as a teenager:  Model 94, 32ws, born in 1965.   None are pristine, but I can sure feel and love the history on these.  They have ‘been there and done that!’.

I do have some questions on the rear sights on the top 3, but I think those questions should be posted in the Sights group.  Thanks for your comments!

bruce

I like them Bruce, they have the kind of personality I like. I have some guns like yours which are lots of fun. I have a really nice piece or two which I regret are more worry than anything else. Those will be the first to go when I’m done, the hobby grade stuff I’ll keep forever. Something for everyone out there !

Hello Bruce & welcome to the WACA forums!

Please tell me more about #2 & #3.  Both are candidates for my research survey.

Bottom gun owned by a serious hunter–the sling proves it.

Hi Bert.  What would you like to know about #2 and #3?  I’d be happy to help with your survey.  PM or visible in this topic?  Let me know!

Welcome, Bruce! You’re going to fit right in around here. I must respectfully but vigorously disagree with your negative “collector grade” assessment. Most high condition guns will never have even a small percentage of the character and history represented by these four. You can indeed feel the history in some old guns!

Hi Mike.  Thanks for your comment, and I agree ‘collector grade’ is maybe not the perfect label.  I love old guns with character and history and in fact that’s all I collect these days.  The more history they have seen the better.  All I meant is that these are not high condition expensive pristine guns that have not ‘been there and done that!’  But they are certainly super ‘collectable’ for me!

The serial numbers for both.  I can fill in the rest of the blanks based on what I can see in the picture of them.  PM or post works.

I really like these. Lot’s of character and perfectly fine examples of the models.

“Collector grade” is a relative term. #1 rule of collecting, collect what you like.

I WISH I was in a position to observe that rule; however, my #1 rule is, unfortunately, collect what I have the money to pay for.

Clarence, I think we all fall somewhere in that same spot.  One of the first things my mentors told me was to buy the best gun you can afford.  Later good guns can be sold and then you can trade up.  In some cases I have traded up more than once.  Don’t buy bad guns.
