I am considering purchasing a Model 1892 in 38-40 caliber:
- The rifle was made in late 1894 to early 1895.
- It has been lightly used in comparison to many other 1892s that I have seen for sale on the Internet
- The rifle has about 95% blue with some areas developing a light reddish brown patina muting the blue.
- The wood has some surface scratches and depressions but is generally in good condition. No cracks, splits or gouges.
- Wood fits to metal well including the butt plate and receiver
- Two screw heads have some damage.
- There are no shiny corners on the metal.
- The rifle had two owners who kept the rifle stored in closets most of the time. The second owner is the seller.
- In general the rifle looks quite good for a 110 year old firearm.
- The only problem is the bore has some light pitting though the land and grove corners are sharp. The lands and groves are well defined at the end of the muzzle.
- The seller wants about half what Fjestad’s Blue Book indicates for an Antique Model 1892 in such fine exterior condition.
- Can someone tell me if light bore pitting significantly reduces the value of the rifle.
Thanks.
Harry,
Get as many photos of the rifle as you can and send them to me via the email in this link. I will be happy to advise.
