Once again I need access to your knowledge on Winchester firearms. This time I have found a Model 70 Featherweight in .308 for sale. I always wanted such a firearm even though I mainly collect the later lever actions made by Winchester.
Anyway, I have discovered it is not that easy to identify when a Model 70 was made and with which features a rifle like this came with judging by the serial number alone. I believe the rifle in question is made sometimes after 1968 judging by the serial number starting with the letter “G”.
I have sent the seller a message asking for more details. In the meantime I hope you guys can shed some light on the weapon I might purchase. I have attached a couple of photos copied from the seller´s ad. Hopefully that will be sufficient for you guys who know far more on the topic of model 70s than I do.
Thanks in advance for any input, have a great day!
Sincerely,
This rifle is a “Classic Featherweight” made by the US Repeating Arms Co. in the early 1990’s. It has the controlled round feed that was also present in the original Pre-64 Model 70 rifles. FWIW, it has a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x scope, my favorite scope for these featherweight rifles. As it sits, it would be an excellent hunting rifle.
