I recently posted about a real nice winchester 76 I had gotten. I was asked to post pictures but could not at the time as I was only a guest. I have since upgraded to a paid member so now I’m going to try to post some now. Notice the external loading gate screw, the lack of a screw on the front and rear sight
the hole for the set trigger and the ends of the set trigger pins used to plug the holes. also note worthy is the lack of scrolls before and after the model 1876 on the top tang.Serial number data says this gun should date to 1877 BUT CODY information states this gun went to the warehouse in May 1880 after having been changed from and octagonal barrel to a round barrel cal 45-75 and removing the set trigger for a plain trigger.Left warehouse June 1880.

That looks like an interesting rifle with interesting history. Did you get your reloading components yet? I know you like to shoot the old ones. I bet those 1876 rifles are fun to shoot.

Hi Brad. Yes I got my dies, 40 rounds of Jamison brass, some 300 gr flat nose gascheck bullets and a can of 4759 and trailboss powders.
I loaded up the 40 Jamison cases, twenty with 4759 and twenty with trailboss. then I found some 50-70 empties and reformed them into 45-75’s.
All was going well until I tried the reformed 50-70’s through the action. The first one jammed tight in the carrier block. That’s when I found out 50-70 rims are about .050″ larger than 45-75 rims. Simple fix, I just chucked them in my half inch battery drill and spun them against my belt sander. Ten minutes all 15 slid right through the action, almost. They were extremely tight in the chamber. It seems I put too much crimp on them and put 3 rings in the neck. A trip through a 45 colt size die ironed out the rings and they worked like they should have. Now I have a source of brass if I ever wear out the jamison brass.
I’m not going to get out doors until the weather warms up, but I might just venture over to the new indoor range that went in by me last year. 50 yard rifle up to 50 cal. and 25 yd pistol. I’ll let you know how it shoots when I go.
