I photographed another one yesterday. This was my first Winchester purchased for my collection about 5 months ago. I was pretty nervous putting out some substantial cash for my first piece however with quite a bit of help from a couple long time members here (thanks guys) I think I did ok.
Just like my 86 SRC I posted images of a few weeks ago this is a honest old (1892) Winchester that has really been taken care of over the years.
Bob, I did get my deck power washed since my last photo session, but still need to apply some sealer!
Thanks in advance for your comments and views. (tap photos to enlarge)

Very nice looking 1886! Do you plan on shooting it?
I acquired an 1886 in 40-82 earlier this year, round barrel and not nearly as nice as yours, but with about a 9 bore. Just now getting around to developing some loads for it after finally getting cartridges and a reloading die set in 40-82. Should get her out to the range in a week or two.

Hey Wincacher.
The bore on this 40-82 is really nice as well, so firing shouldn’t be a problem. I purchased a box of vintage Winchester 40-82s for display and also a box of 40-82s from Buffalo Arms, just in case I do decide to shoot it. I plan on finding me a shooter, perhaps in Reno.

Must be M1886 week. I just traded for this 1890 mfg. M1886 Sporting Rifle. Not as nice as yours, but no slouch either. It is a 40-65 standard rifle.Big Larry
Thanks guys for your comments.
Larry, Good looking 86. I had a rare opportunity to purchase a 1894 vintage 86 40-65 in 95>100% condition a couple weeks ago and passed, been kicking myself ever since.

I learned that lesson a long time ago……you snooze you loose!!! I still kick myself for a few winchesters i didn’t pick up……. But that is a beautiful rifle none the less!
Yes, like the Gambler said,” you got to know when to walk away and when to run.” Most I have missed over the years were too expensive for me. M1886’s are just about the top of the food chain and some of the most expensive Winchesters ever made. Over the years, I have owned every model lever gun Winchester ever made except the M1901 shotgun. Guns I bought back in the 60’s cheap, are big $$$ now, but I sold or traded most of them away over the years. Hard to collect now unless you have a lot of spare change. I do manage a nice Winchester every so often though. Big Larry

Nice rifle(s)! I don’t have an 86 yet and quite frankly I hope a pretty one doesn’t wander my way anytime soon because I’d have to sell a kidney to buy it. Guess I’ll pass the time reading up on the 40-82 and 40-65. Not familiar with either cartridge but will probably shoot my 86 when I finally get enough money scraped together.
Larry and Kevin (and others, too!),
Nice rifles and both should be proud to own them! Now a few comments, if my mind doesn’t wander too far. Mostly tripped by Larry’s comments about owning some nice stuff years ago when they were “cheap”. First, back in the day, I couldn’t afford the cheap stuff any better than I can afford the expensive stuff today! Had I known then what I know now, maybe I would have taken out a bank loan and purchased several of the really expensive, good condition 1886 SRC’s that were priced in the $400 range! It is all relative! Next, and I bet Bert will confirm this too, prices are easing off to include 1886’s except for the ones in the very best condition. And it seems to me way too many 98% plus guns are coming out of the vaults/closets to all be correct and not restored by the true professionals that are undetectable (or nearly so). Lastly, long ago I decided the pain of paying too much for a really nice Winchester goes away much quicker than the regrets from not getting it! There is still hope for all, just keep looking and keep dreaming. Dreams do come true.

There are some nice 86s out there. I’ve become very fond of this model and the 73s as well.

Beautiful ’86. I enjoyed looking at those photos. Lots of case colour on that rifle.
Glad you like my sharing photos of my Winchesters here. I don’t see that many collectors posting up photos of their rifles and being fairly new I wasn’t sure it was appropriate.

Thanks for your comments Tim and I totally agree with your statement about paying too much.

Old time collector once wrote that for the really good rifles you don’t pay too much but you may buy too early. Pretty sure I’m paraphrasing here but I know he was right.
