I have a Model 94 with S# 1263392 that I received from my uncle upon his passing. He was my long time hunting teacher and partner. I believe this gun was manufactured between 1941-1948 judging by what I have found so far. My question concerns the sight at the rear of the gun just behind the hammer. I believe it is a Lyman sight. Did these come mounted on the gun from the factory? It has no markings on the sight and I cannot get the knurled cylinder to turn to raise it. It does flip up for use, but needs to raise to see the front sight. Also it looks like the front sight hood is missing. Was this supposed to be on there? I see grooves where it would mount. Any info that you can provide would be very helpful.
Hello Lamar,
The serial number identifies it as a 1941 production Model 94 Carbine.
Tang sights made by Lyman were factory installed by Winchester on special order. That stated, more often than not, they were installed as an aftermarket item. Winchester drilled & tapped the upper tang behind the hammer so that they could be installed. I suggest that you remove the sight from the uppoer tang, and then give it an overnight soak in Kroil. That should free up the elevation thimble and allow it to turn.
Yes, it should have a front sight hood.
Which caliber is it (e.g. 25-35 WCF, 30 WCF, or 32 WS)? Does it have a “W” stamped below the serial number?
