Hi, Several years ago my wife and I inherited a Winchester rifle and we are now trying to get some idea of its relative value.  It seems to be in good working condition but right now it is only collecting dust in a closet.  I would like to eventually sell it to someone who might better appreciate it.

The Winchester is a Model 92 32WCF, serial number is L59750 with a 24 inch octagon barrel, adjustable rear sight and a double trigger.  I am a guest here but can anyone give me a ballpark estimate of what this gun might actually be worth?

Any thoughts or feedback would greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Hello Bill,

The serial number is actually “159750” and that tells us that it is a March 1901 production Model “1892” (marked accordingly on the upper tang behind the hammer).  If the barrel is marked “MODEL 92”, it is not original to the rest of the rifle.

If you can do so, send pictures of the rifle and all of the visible markings on the barrel and receiver frame to me via email.

Pictures received, but they did not include any pictures of the factory roll markings on the barrel.  The tang sight is covering the “MODEL 1892” marking on the upper tang.

Can you forward them to me please Bert?  I want to add the rifle into my survey.

Here are the images of the rifle in question.  As Bert mentioned earlier the upper tang of the receiver will be marked as MODEL 1892 beneath the folding peep sight and shown below.

The barrel is definitely not original to the gun as shown by the “MODEL  92” designation which did not come into use until 1920 and was not applied to barrels on these rifles until late in 1925.  There is no W/P proof stamp on the receiver top opposite the stamp on the barrel so I doubt that the replacement was done by Winchester.  Because the rifle is not “factory original” it will have far less potential value to serious Winchester collectors.  The double set triggers are an option that is sought after but will only partially offset the non original configuration.  I would estimate that you could sell it for $1500 on Gunbroker.com but will need some better images.
