I have a 44 #6778 & a 25 #962338 if these # will help you. The 44 is lucky, kill a deer or hog every trip to the woods. Steve

It is most likely a rebarreled Model 1892. The serial number and upper tang marking are the key clues.

I agree. Any rifle that says ‘Model 53’ on the barrel and ‘Model 1892’ on the upper tang is a rebarrelled Model 1892.

Something much rarer, but I know of two now, is a Model 92 with what at first appears to be an early a serial number, below 10,874 but the upper tang has no Model number on it, just ‘–WINCHESTER– TRADE MARK– Made in USA–. If you come across one of those, it is a Model 92 built on an early Model 53 receiver, if the barrel date is in the 20’s. If anyone ever comes across one of these, use the contact email for the Model 53 database and get in touch with me.

win38-55, The tang nomenclature as you describe here matches my 64xx (not exactly early) SN Model 53, 44 WCF, presently in your survey. Per your request here, just sent you an email (19 March 2018) with all relevant details and availability of relevant pix. Had this one at least several decades. Just a bit slow on the ‘pickup’ here! 🙂
Not sure what it all means…
A confused…

Has nothing to do with this thread. I LIKE EM. Especially in 44 caliber. Lightweight and fast pointing. Very accurate too. Almost as accurate as a 24″ rifle. Big Larry

Thanks and much appreciated.
