What year did Winchester begin making the 1895 in 30-06?  An article in American Rifleman states that it was 1906.  I’m looking at one online that has a serial number of 3698, which says it was made in 1897.  I checked with the seller and they double checked and verified the model, caliber, and serial number.

An 1897 vintage Model 1895 would not be a 30-06. Instead, it most likely is a “30 U.S.” which is the designation that Winchester used for the 30-40 Krag cartridge.

Keep in mind that the 06 stands for 1906.

THIS ALL STARTED WITH JUST ONE GUN!

The seller insists that the information posted is correct.  The serial number has the prefix “NF” so the complete SN is NF3698.  Not sure what the NF stands for, but on Winchester’s serial number lookup page it shows no results when run with the NF prefix.  Do you have any idea what the meaning of NF is?

I think I would ask the seller for a factory letter showing the ser# and the configuration and date of manufacture. I don’t believe there is such a ser# with nf prefix.

Probably a reproduction.
