 All,

Am looking at an 1894 rifle, SN 179735, that is a takedown in 38-55 caliber with and extra light barrel.  In addition, it has plain pistol grip stock with checkering and shotgun style butt with a rubber pad.  You can see a picture of the gun at:

http://www.asauctions.com/current.php?pg=4&np=20

I ran the serial number and everything checks out, just wanted to get some opinions on the rarity of the gun with these features.

Thanks,

Mark,

It is not as rare as the auction company is alluding to, but it most certainly is not a common configuration.

The auction is offering some pretty cool stuff in general.

Any opinions on Lot 72 1873 Carbine and Lot 513 1866 Rifle?

******************

LOT 72 – High condition Winchester, Model 1873, SRC, 44-40 cal., SN 536022B, manufactured 1899, 20″ round barrel, retaining much of its original case colors on frame and very desirable butterfly markings at saddle ring area. Excellent bore and condition. Definitely, collectors should take a look at this one!! (MOD)

Anyone know what is being referred to by the ‘very desirable butterfly markings at the saddle ring area?

Well Kevin,

It’s the mark on the receiver, where the saddle ring has worn through the finish, down to the bare metal of the receiver from use.

That’s what I thought, however surprised that would be considered “very desirable”Confused In fact, I believe I would rather my ’73’ Carbine not have it.

All,

Thanks for the feedback.  On the 1873 Lot #72 looks like a good condition gun; my only concern was the cased color comment.  Didn’t think the 1873 had cased color hardening done.  May have been an option but don’t think that is the case, so to speak.

Bert,

Just read in Madis book that the taper barrel is somewhat unusual with the full magazine and octagonal barrel.  Have bought a fair bit of stuff from these guys and like most auction houses they are adding more and more hype as time goes on.  The auctions from a couple of years ago were unusually laid back and the quality was quite high.  Lately it seems like many auction houses, these guys included, are more hyped up and generally lower quality stuff.

Not sure if that is something happening everywhere, but it seems like it is.  Was hoping to get to Cody show but had last minute obligations take precedent.  Am going to try and get to the next Reno show and see if it offers up a different perspective on quality versus pricing.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Regards,

Mark,

I saw that 73 and its blued. I would expect Butterfly wear from the saddle ring on a SRC with some wear to it. If I didn’t see that I would be suspicious of the finish. Now if you have a minty gun then you probably will not have it.
