Howdy,  Just wondering if anyone has ever figured out, approximately,  how many of these were made in each length of barrel.  How many 14 inch, how many 16 inch etc..  I have a Model 92 with a 16 inch barrel and am curious about it.

Hello brokenshoes,

I am working on a survey of the 1892 rifle in an effort to answer just such sorts of questions.  The factory ledgers exist for only the first 380,000 Model 1892’s so a good idea of the numbers can be gleaned from that info which I am working on but that still leaves almost 2/3rds of the production unaccounted for.  Obviously then the real number will never be known but a guesstiamte can be achieved.  What is the SN of your rifle?  Can I get some photos of it so that I can add the gun into my survey.  I am glad to answer any questions.

Michael,  Thanks for the reply.  I sent you pics of this rifle about a month ago.  It is the 16 inch with the trapdoor in the buttplate.  I didnt think anyone had these numbers, but thought it worth a try.  One question for you tho— Were the short barreled Model 1892s/92s, with the trapdoor, supplied with a cleaning rod?  I have never heard of any.

I have numbers for all short rifles between 32496 and 379696. However, these include only rifles with 14″ and 15″ barrels. This list also includes one 12″round barrel takedown in .44 caliber. When this survey was done in 2003, nothing over 15″ was included. I also have a list of short barrel carbines between 44551 and 379933.this includes 12″, 14″ and 15″ carbines.

Twobit, In case you didn’t note my post in the “surveys” subforum, I have Model 92 short rifle sn 959636, 20 inch barrel with short forearm.  I believe it is from 1926.  Excellent condition.

Brokenshoes,

Model 1892 rifles which had the trapdoor but plate are noted in the ledgers as “Rod in Butt.”  So I would assume that along with the butt plate that a cleaning rod was included with the rifle.

Hello Geo,

That is a quite nice and unique little rifle.  Could I please get the full serial number and some detail photos of the stamped writing on the gun so that I can enter it into my survey?

Thanks so much

Michael
