Howdy,  I just found and bought an 1886 SRC with the short forearm and am wondering just how many of these were made.  Also, how many do you think are still in existence?  The table in Madis figures out to about 800 total, including the long forearm style.  Just wondering if his figures are still correct for this carbine.  Thanks!

Madis’ figures are way off! If I recall correctly, of 159,994 Model 1886’s produced, about 5% of production was a SRC, which would mean around 8,000.

John Madl has published a coil-bound book on the Winchester Model 1886 after having done some very detailed research. Not all the records are available for the Model 1886, but of those that are recorded at Cody, 4.4% were carbines. Madl’s breakdown is as follows:

Rifle: 134,295 (95.3%)

Carbine: 6,223 (4.4%)

Musket: 374 (0.3%)

One thing I do know is that decent original Model 1886 SRC’s are hard to find.

I have managed to get one of the early carbines with the long fore stock.  Are there any production totals concerning these early production carbines?

Thanks, RR

Roger,

If anyone has that answer it will be John Madl, or possibly Russ Day.

Roger,

Get in touch with John Madl and buy a copy of his book.
