This one is from 1906.
The finish has browned and the bore has interesting pits but the wood is nice and it shoots well enough at 100 yards to handle whatever is hunting you. I remember hearing or reading that very few of these EHB 45-70s, perhaps a thousand, were manufactured but I can’t find any info on production numbers. Your thoughts are appreciated since the herd has gotten too large and I must decide on which animals to cull.
Thanks, Bruce
Bruce–According to John Madl 620 EHB guns have been located so far. He wrote the booklet “Identifying your model 1886 Winchester” in 2003 and
added more info in 2014 and reprinted it. I am selling these for 30.00 post paid if you are interested. Did you know they made an 86 in 30-06 and shot it till it was destroyed…Bill

Hey Bill, Wish you had that one? hahaha. Bet that is great topic of discussion how they modified the bolt to function on a rimless cartridge. Didn’t they make one in 308 also? BTW how many 30″ EHB were made. Unless I missed it John doesn’t break it down by barrel length.

It was the Model 71 that Winchester used to make (2) rifles in .308 caliber. Dan Shuey wrote a nice article a few years ago about one of them, and I mentioned both of them in my recent article discussing the Model 71 production.
