My buddy called from his gun shop today and asked me if I knew how to get a live round out if an 1873 so I went by to see what he had. Some dummy had tried to load “grandads” or some old family members rifle from the top and had gotten the round hung up. I took the action apart and fixed it. What got me was that I thought I kept seeing a lot of case color traces. At first I thought an old light cold blue was on the receiver but when cleaned it looked different. Also the elevator was silver plated with an engraved name on the bottom beside the caliber in basically the same font. At this point I called Jessie. She just goy back and the letter does say case hardened and that it was returned for work after initial shipping. The gun wasn’t for sale but now thinking about trying to buy it. What say you on 1873 case hardened rarity?
Case hardening is not rare with 73’s. Did the plating and engraving letter?

I would guess 20% of the 73’s were cased. The rarity is when you have a lot of case left.
