Hi all – been awhile since I had any new Winchesters to discuss! But, today my latest purchase was dropped off – an 1866 2nd model, serial #22042. It does have a couple of warts – holes drilled in the receiver and a broken lower tang – but it does have some charm as well. I definitely appreciate any info or opinions ya’ll might be able to give me on this one. Pictures:

Its a Henry marked gun which is a plus but it has a extra hole in the receiver for removing the extractor and it has a 73 extractor with a notch cut on the front side of the elevator port. It was probably dropped on the stock breaking the lower tang and splitting the stock at the wrist ( two holes or screws on the left side). Also the rear site is installed backwards. The notches on the bottom of the stock give it character.
As a guest you have to host the pictures on a third party site and link to them like you did.

Awesome, thank you! I think you helped me out with the receiver hole over on Gunboards. The Henry marking was a nice little extra. The tang break was…a less pleasant surprise. Ah well, these guns have been through quite a bit over the past 155+ years.
I will get that rear sight switched around.

Congrats, an honest old gun with a truckload of character.

Thanks all – character it sure has in abundance! Too bad the meaning of the notches is lost to time. One of these days I may try to snag a bit higher condition gun, but I have always had a bit of a soft spot for an old gun that shows a bit of its history, so to speak. And this one was a bit of a package deal, as it opened the door to a further purchase of an 1873 that is enroute…I’ll post that one up when I get it as well.

Now that rifle has character. You have to wonder what the four notches represent. If only it could talk.
The first notch is Sam Bass, the second Jesse James, the third is Billy The Kid, and the fourth is An Outlaw To Be Named Later! LOL, probably prairie dogs killed or keeping track of how many times the owner had to do the dishes that one month on the trail.

Gave me a good chuckle.
