That is interesting. It gives us an idea of how long Winchester kept some rifle barrels in their inventory.
Thus far I have found 219 Zipper barrels with "36", "37", "38", "39", and "40" dates on them, with none later.

so does this mean quiet possibly that all barrels were made 41 and prior, giving most of the information that I was able to find (before joining this great forum)that .219 zippers were just made up to 41?
It is possible that the barrel were all made prior to 1941, but that does not translate to "that .219 zippers were just made up to 41".
The barrels were simply just one component of the entire rifle, and there were more 219 Zippers manufactured (assembled) in the year 1946 and 1947 than all other years combined. The serial numbers on the receiver are the defining determination for when Winchester made them.

I’m happy to see that you are actively pursuing this issue Bert. I believe that it will prove that .219 Zippers are far more scarce than the 1 in 12 ratio that we discussed. Either way, it makes your survey all the more worthwhile for everyone concerned!

James,
Only time and more survey data will tell…
Thus far, I have 1,228 Model 64 serial numbers surveyed. Of that number, 100 of them are confirmed 219 Zippers. That numercially still translates to a 1:12 ratio, and an extrapolated total of approximately 5,440 total Zippers manufactured. I suspect that number is a bit high, but more than likely much closer to the truth than just over 800.

Possibly, Bert, possibly. I’m thinking that a midway point between those two numbers might be closer, and even that figure might be somewhat on the high side. Like I said, though, it is nice to know that you are taking a look at this particular issue, which might well shed some light, perhaps not much, but some, on how Winchester approached the marketing of a new gun, including new calibers in terms of production numbers – this in addition to ensuring a more accurate ratio for the Zippers. I’m still of the belief that the Zippers assembled for sale in 1946 and 1947 was probably due to a parts clean up type operation, but maybe not.

Bert, Maybe this has been discussed and I missed it. How many years after the War was the Model 64 advertised, and/or cataloged, as available in .219 Zipper caliber?
The 219 Zipper was still listed in the 1948 catalog. I do not have access to my later catalogs, but I seem to remember it still being listed in 1949.
