I have two questions regarding ages (year of manufacture). I have a Winchester 1873 38-40 and a Winchester Model (18)90 .22 Short. They both have octagon barrels.
The 1873 Serial Number is: 223194B
The 90 Serial Number is: 760727
Also, does the B on the 1873 SN effect its value in anyway (I.e.: budget model)?
Thomas,
Go to the top of the page and click “Resources” from there you select “When was your Winchester made”.
The B in the 73 does not change or mean anything. All the guns had then during that time period. Guns with a pistol grip didn’t have then with exception and that was because they didn’t have room to fit the letter in.

Your Model 90 was made in October, 1927.

3Dub,
Let me know if you need any additional information on my Model 90 for your survey. It’s in working and firing condition. I shot them both (1873) within the past 2 weeks. The Model 90 looks mostly (if not all) original.
The 1873 had the firing spring (leaf spring on the lower tang and the small piece that attaches it to the trigger assembly) replaced last year (with an after market parts) and some additional fixes (better conditioned screws and replacement screws) with “Original” 1873 parts. I still have all of the removed screws and original broken parts. The 1873 has been in my family (with the broken firing spring) for at least the past 45 years. Two weeks ago was the first time it has been fired in at least 45 years! And it performed flawlessly!
