The model 94 I have is a solid frame and has a 22″ octagon barrel, .75″ from muzzle face to front site front dovetail, about 7 5/8″ from muzzle to magazine mount retaining pin, and the rear site is 5″ from receiver. The front stock screw is 9 13/16″ from receiver. I got my letter from Cody today and does not mention a barrel length, which I think means it was a 26″ barrel. My question is, if the barrel was cut down, wouldn’t the dovetails be in the wrong place. The Barrel markings are what looks like a small half moon, a “D”, 32-40, VP inside an oval, a small star and “94”. Also do I need something else from Cody to identify stock, butt plate, finish, etc. Thanks for your help.

Mark,
It sounds like the barrel has been cut. The fact that the CFM letter makes no reference to the barrel length strongly suggests that it started out as a full length 26″ rifle. The other clues are:
- The magazine retaining band is in the wrong position, (it should be 3.8″ to 3.9″ from the muzzle end)
- The front sight center of dovetail should be 1″
- About 80% of 22″ short rifles have the rear sight positioned at 4″ from the receiver, and the fore end wood is 8 3/8″ long. I’m guessing yours is 9 3/8″

Thanks for your help Gary,
The rifle is in poor condition but is an early one, shipped 1898, so plan on hanging on the wall. I’m just having a hard time with the dovetail locations. The front sight is 1″ to center by the way. If a 26″ barrel was shortened by cutting the muzzle by 4″ and re-cut the sight dovetail, wouldn’t the dovetail for the magazine retaining band be closer to the muzzle by 4″. Unless you are saying that the original dovetail for the 26″ barrel is 4″ or less and both of them were cut off by shortening the barrel and both re-cut, then it makes sense. So is the correct position for the magazine band on a 26″ barrel also 3.8 to 3.9 inches? Also there is no stock information on the Cody letter, does that mean none is available? Thanks for all your help!!!

Mark,
The band position would have been the same on the 26″ barrel (3.8 – 3.9) so when they cut down the barrel is was lost along with the front sight slot obviously.
If there is no stock information then it should have been a standard crescent butt with straight grain wood for your rifle.
