Thank you for indulging my first post as a request got guidance and information. I am the new owner of a M70 that I believe came out of the Custom Shop in the early ’90’s. Lenny at Winchester and the folks in Cody have been unable to help me with any information. I’d like to know what additional treatments custom guns received in that time frame. The serial number is G1592 in 338 Winchester. Both proofs are apparent on the barrel. I’d love to know what makes the gun special in addition to the obvious. I love the uncheckered bolt!
Thanks much for any assistance.
Hi, there were countless options you could order. The custom shop proof on the barrel, the short serial number, and smooth bolt handle make me confident your rifle was from the custom shop. I have some old order guides somewhere that show some of the numerous options, but sky was the limit with the custom shop. The bare bones custom shop guns were usually super grades and had lead lapped bores, jeweled bolts and followers, unchecked bolt, and custom shop proof. Somewhere out there is a letter that is serial numbered to your rifle that lists all the options it was ordered with. I would imagine someone at Winchester would know where the copies of those letters are. I’m surprised Lenny didn’t know. If you can post a pic of the rifle I may be able to give more details because if it’s a higher grade rifle the work was most likely farmed out and you could track down who made the stock or did the metal work.

Just the remark…
With exception of serial and ‘unadorned’ bolt handle, sounding very much like my “Classic Super Grade”, in .338 Win Mag. “SG” marked floorplate, engine turned bolt, great wood! Really beautiful tiger stripe buttstock. Purchased new, off the shelf here in SoCal in early nineties. Big sale at @ about $560 as shop later going O/B. Sn G483xx.
sounds like you got a great one too! Good luck on getting your Custom Shop info!
Happy new year!
