Has to be a real early proofed Carbine, but I have never seen one with the proof mark forward of the rear sight. Scarce or no??

Thanks, Big Larry

Larry,

Winchester started Proof Making the Model 1894 in May 1905 (including the SRCs). Your SRC was manufactured 1-year after proof marking began, and it is one of at least nine SRCs that I have found thus far with the barrel proof mark stamped forward of the rear sight. The serial number range is 306350 – 384000 for the SRCs marked like yours. I do not believe that they are “scarce” per se.

If you have seen only 6, I would say they are very scarce. Out of 7,000,000+++???  Big Larry

Larry,

I have documented nine of them thus far… and I am only one man, looking at a very small percentage of the Model 1894s made.

Using 7,000,000+ as a production reference point versus the nine of them that I have found is bogus.  Winchester only manufactured 2,600,011 Pre-1964 Model 1894/94s, and a more realistic yardstick comparison would be to use the 138,051 Model 1894s manufactured in the years 1906 – 1908 were the nine were found.
