Coming up at RIA:

https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/1041/1/atlanta-police-department-winchester-model-1873-rifle

Do we know how many of these were made?  I’ve heard of them before but never held one in my hand.  Were all 20 inch octagon barreled short rifles?  Was there ever an article in the WACA magazine on them?  Anyone tracking known examples?

A serial number would have been helpful, from the description a letter may be in hand. Frustrating.

It was shortened to 20″. They where all 24″ guns. The highest engraved number I have come across was 125.

As Bob said, they were all 24″ OB FM CB rifles with sling swivels in 44 WCF. There were 125 of them made.

The first order of 50 (#19207) was shipped on 3/6/89 and the second order of 75 (#9045) was shipped on 2/24/90.

Something I’ve noticed is the first order doesn’t show the rack number in the letters, just “Engraved Atlanta Police”. The second order showed the rack numbers in the factory ledger as well, which is nice. The sling swivels are called out as well in the letters I’ve seen. I owned #74 for quite a few years but sold it at Cody a while back, hoping I could find one in better condition someday. There’s about 25 of them that have surfaced as I recall. It’s surprising how often they show up for sale. I’ve run across 3 or 4 in my limited travels.

I agree with Bob.  Notice the long forend and the non-factory crown on the muzzle.  This gun has been badly abused, in my opinion.  I’ve seen a number of the Atlanta Police 73’s and owned #52 many years ago.  Most I have encountered were in very nice condition.  My #52 was a beautiful gun.  Wish I still had it.

I’m going to speculate that all of the use and abuse this rifle received did not occur in the service of the Atlanta PD.

Thanks to all who contributed.  I know a whole lot more than I did about these.

This one here was already in my survey from a RIA on 12/14 and they did say it was cut to 20″ at that time. I have 27 of them so far.
