Good morning!

I am looking for photos of the shotgun style buttplate for the ‘76. It’s the smooth steel plate with the widows peak at the top. I’ve seen plastic, and checkered versions, but no steel version photo. I need one, and I’m told I can take a checkered style and grind it down, but it would be nice to have a few good photos of one. Or better, one to buy…. but that’s seeming unlikely.

I saw one on a “restored” top-dollar rifle on a well known auction house that had a plastic version on it. I can only speculate that it was not original, and that my quest to buy one will be fruitless and the suggestion to grind down the Model 70 version is my best bet.

Any guidance is always appreciated.

Thank you

Justin

Justin, The smooth steel butt plates on the 76 are very similar to the ones on early 86s, the size my differ but the style is the same. Maybe you widen the search.  Just food for thought. T/R

The smooth steel butt plate was also used on the Model 1885, Model 1893, and Model 1897 up through about 1904.

Thanks. I’ll add the models to my search. A quick search did not result in a hit, but I’ll keep looking.

Thank you Bob.

I can see if I don’t find one, I have a lot of grinding to do on the checkered version.

Take a picture of the butt then mark all of the dimensions on it.  Use this during your search. If it is slightly larger that is better than smaller.  Some bending and filing may be necessary for fitment.  Best to let your contacts do this fitment for you.

Is this the proper plate for the 76 shotgun butt? Site says it from a 1887, and Bert had that in my search list.

It is the correct style, but you will not know how well it fits until you try it.  When you try mounting it, slowly tighten the screws, and do not over tighten them trying to get the butt plate seated.  Go slow, and carefully check all of the fit points.  If it does not fit, do not force it!

Thank you! It’s a new stock I need to fit it, so it’ll need to fit the wood to the plate in most respects.

You have to remember that the 1887 came with 2 different widths.  I made a pattern and carried it with me to shows for quite a while trying to find the wider one. The narrow one is not as hard to find.   Bert knows that I had to buy a second gun just to get the buttplate that would fit my 1887.

Thanks Chuck. If this won’t fit my 76, I have the checkered version I can grind down and polish. I’m just trying to take the easy road and we all know how that ends.
