Complete serial number?
Bert
#827006
January 7th, 1916. I have previously documented this rifle in my research survey.
Much appreciated, Bert!
It’s possible that I posted here on the forum asking for a manufacture date for this rifle a couple years ago. I joined the forum a couple years ago and could have sworn that I had made some posts but when I logged in the other day I noticed I didn’t have a posting history in the 2 years since I joined. Have had to deal with some medical issues for a couple years and interrupted my hobbies.
Thanks again for the help!

OfflineHello everyone, new to the forum, but have loved and collected (gathered lol) old winchesters for quite a few years. I was just given a model 1894 SRC ser# 42384 in 38-55. It was a ranch rifle and saw lots of use and abuse. My question is what year of manufacture, and should I keep it original or have it restocked for a shooter? Any help would be appreciated.

Your Model 1894 SRC is a bona fide “antique” per Federal regulations as it was manufactured in May of the year 1898. As it is now, it is quite collectable. Doing anything to it beyond as careful cleaning will negatively affect the value of the gun… leave it as is!

Thanks Bert,
I am lucky to have several model 1894’s, a 1873, and several pump action .22 rifles. Have never done anything other than good cleaning on any of them. This one has a couple of chips out of the stock near the tang which is why I asked about restocking it. It’ll get a good cleaning and then shot once in a while.
my next question is what brand of ammo do you recommend. I don’t want to cause any damage to the gun when I shoot it.
thanks for your response on the manufacturing date.

OnlineCorrect ammo is going to be difficult to find. The bore on your old Model 1894 was a nominal .378″. Many of them were slightly bigger “.379 – .380″). Modern 38-55 ammo is most frequently found with .375” diameter bullets, and they will not shoot accurately in your old SRC. When you find a source of 38-55 ammo make sure that it is loaded with the correct diameter bullets. Any correct factory new ammo will be safe to shoot as long is the gun is in sound mechanical condition.
