hello all,
i’ve had this rifle my whole life, shot it a bit as a kid, but it originally came from my fathers grandfather.
Basically i’m looking for input on two things, firstly what is the value of this gun, secondly, my wish is to use this as intended originally, as a saddle/bush/ and general purpose rifle. i get that this may destroy the gun, seeing as i believe given the SN it was made in 1894, so id like impressions/stories from experience on this topic.
about the gun: (this will be short and sweet) firstly to note, the SN stamp just forward of the lever on the bottom of the receiver says 812X, only other markings on the barrel is the mfg stamp, and .30wcf, no nickle steal barrel or anything, all though the barrel is what i would consider a bull barrel, maybe that’s just normal for the era, also with no crown. its rather short definitely a carbine length, i believe 20in barrel. looks to be oak furnished, no saddle ring. personally i would say its in 78-85% condition.
looking forward to getting info
thanks,
-E
If the serial number is in the 8120 – 8120 range, it was actually manufactured in the latter half of the year 1895 (September). Based on your description of the rifle, I am getting the impression that it has been altered from its original as built configuration. I highly recommend that you contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office and purchase a Factory letter for it. You will need to provide them with the complete serial number (no “X” digit). If you can post (or send me) clear pictures of the rifle, I can provide an assessment of the graded condition and value.
