OfflineHello all,
I was “busy” for a long weekend in New Orleans so replying this a bit late. I did message the seller and was pretty much dismissed with a “the people creating either the ledger or pulling the info for the letter probably just made a mistake” answer. It is interesting that the barrel is definitely from a short barrel rifle since the rear sight is positioned closer to the receiver than standard and the caliber stamp has been placed on the left flat versus the top which would have been standard at the time. Still, WAY too many thing that do not match up to think it is original by any measure.

OnlineMichael, Thanks for trying. And you’ve brought the discussion further along by seeing something I couldn’t — that the sight position Indicates the barrel was made short at the factory. [Is there any possibility the original seat could have been welded up, a new one cut, and the barrel re-blued and then aged? I’ll agree that would be a long way to go for a couple of grand.]

OnlineI don’t have a grip on genuine baby rifles and carbines. Can anyone with knowledge of that market guess what a short 1892 SRC 44 WCF in this finish condition — forget the rifle butt and the octagon barrel and rifle forearm — just a real SRC with a 14″ barrel, say, might bring at FMV?
Just from looking at some Morphy and Julia auctions, $1600 would seem to my ignorant eye pretty low. Wouldn’t this thing, if it were real, command more juice?

So a friend of mine who I’ve bought a couple of 73s and a colt lighting from has a 1873 with a 14” barrel(could be 15”) but he has the letter for it and it does letter as being geniue. He has it at the gun shows he goes to for $6-7k something high like that, he told me when I showed interest he would take 5 for it but that’s what he needed. I’d love to have it to go with my other 73 variations but shew it’s in a little rougher shape then what I’d see 5k for, there’s a show this weekend he might be at, gonna see about some Indian trading with him maybe lol

If a real 14 inch 44 WCF SRC were at auction it would not surprise me if it would sell for A LOT more than $1600! I would say $4000 to $8000 would not be out of the question. I have attached the “Location” tab for just some of the ones that fit the description. The green highlighted ones show the sold price and there are several more auction house and Lot # identifiers if you want to dig into it further.

Yea really didn’t sell for as high as I thought it would tbh. I’ve definitely seen some worse stuff fetch a grand or more higher. All in all if the gun shoots good not a terrible price, someone posted another like it for 10k🤣🤣
That rifle out of Durango certainly has some problems. The fit of the fore end wood at the receiver is beyond terrible. While the butt stock has clearly been sanded and repaired the fore end is larger than it should be at the receiver end. The magazine retaining band fit very poorly into the dovetail on the underside of the barrel. There does not appear to be a barrel address stamp on the barrel. That gun has been listed several times since I first noted it in June of 2025.

Michael, Thanks. What you’ve shown me is plenty enough.
