Was this gold scroll work a factory option back in the day?  Is receiver just patina or case hardened?  Looks like an old Singer Sewing machine…

(Sorry for the bad pictures)

Thanks, Kevin

Kevin,
That’s a Winchester Model 94 ‘Antique’ carbine. Finish is case colored. Early post-63 gun

Kevin,

What is the serial number on that M94 Carbine?  In the year 1964 (to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Model1894) Winchester manufactured a special variation of the Carbine that featured a case hardened receiver, with scroll decoration, brass saddle ring, and brass plated cartridge spring cover.  Then in 1967 – 1970 time period, Winchester manufactured a M94 referred to as a “Classic” with scroll engraving.

Based on the blued steel Saddle Ring, I am leaning towards it being a “Classic” instead of the “Antique”.  The serial number will tell the story.

That confirms that it is a 1968 production Model 94 Classic.  I do not now what they sell for these days.

Bert, do you have the Winchester Commemoratives book by Tom Trolard?  If not this might help with all these questions.

I do have that book.  However, it does not answer the question at hand.  The Model 94 “Classic” was not a commemorative.  Instead, it was a short lived variation that was manufactured from 1967 – 1970.

Correct, not a commem. It came out in ’67 as a response to public outcry over the new post-63 quality debacle, so they threw some nicer features on it and tried to bring back the prior sentiment for them, hence the “classic” name. I’ve read rumors that they spent a little more time on the manuf process to make their fit & finish a little better than their previous 3 years. The classic is all blued (no fake case colors) with a gold loading gate and scroll engraving around the perimeter of the receiver, not over the middle.

This one is the “Antique” model, but someone has colored in the scroll work with gold (doubt they gold-leafed it) but I’ve seen both gold and black saddle rings IIRC. Both had gold loading gates.

I see them w/box and in newish condition for 1000-1200 and used ones around 800 if still nice. Check Gunbroker completed auctions for current pricing. Yours doesn’t look pristine so I wouldn’t pay a lot more than $5-600.

Ok, this stuff is way out of my area.  I don’t have the book but the Shop has a copy.
