We don’t see a ton of matted barrel Winchesters.  That includes the M1892 where I’ve haven’t seen all that many over the years.  When I have seen them, a matted barrel never been the only special feature of this rifle.  Most have been checkered fancy wood rifles.  That is not the case with this one – a plain rifle ordered with a matted barrel:

Unicorn status for sure.  Especially being a plain rifle, in 38 WCF to boot.

Ended at $4975.00.  Add in sales tax and shipping and some money was spend on this one.  Got to pay to play I suppose.

Definitely an oddity. I can’t say I’ve run across a matted barrel Winchester that didn’t have something else going for it, usually a fancy stock, at a minimum.

I like this old 92 and like others have noted, I have never seen a matted barrel 92. I have owned 3 matted barrel levers during my collecting days – two were model 1894’s and the other is a model 1886 which I still have – all were deluxe configuration guns and I don’t recall seeing a standard grade variaton of any model with the matting – a rare and desirable feature for sure. They say the matting was to reduce the glare on the sighting plane and the old 92 was certainly used but not abused. I think the 92 would be a nice addition to any collection.
