So my question is, did the early 1886 stocks like mine normally have a hole bored in it under the butt? Thanks Nick
Nick,
The answer is yes.
Arthur Pirkle’s book volume 2 says “Rifle Buttstock-Standard M1886 rifles were not drilled for a cleaning rod compartment in the buttstock except on special order. The M1886 rifle buttstocks did have a “hole” 4 1/4 inches deep by 45/64 inches in diameter, too short for the four section cleaning rod. It was drilled only to mount the stock blank on the milling machine.” He doesn’t say when this stops.
The Lightweight rifles had cut outs in the butt stock for balance, different than the hole in the standard rifle.

I wondered how many of y’all checked your butts for any goodies in the last few nights…my wife says I’m such a tight-ass I know I won’t find anything in there…
I very seldom remove a butt plate but when the situation arises I always get a little curious.
