The attached Cabelas gun is an obvious cut-off job due to the lack of a crowned barrel, wrong (long) forearm, and the barrel address being under the forearm band.  However, I’ve been told that the #1 way to identify a fake is to examine how the front sight is attached to the barrel.  Besides the observation that the front sight looks mounted too far from the muzzle, it looks pretty good.  Am I missing something?  Just trying to get educated.

Good observation.  If you look ahead of the rear barrel band, slightly in front of the rust spot, the barrel is darker, as though the barrel band went there originally.  Also, you can clearly see that the original barrel band screw holes in the forearm have been plugged.

Cabelas sell good quality outdoor gear but I’ve never been comfortable with their gun listings and prices, hence I’ve avoided them.

I see what you mean regarding the original location of the rear barrel band.  Other than being a sloppy job, I don’t quite understand why the rear barrel band was relocated.  How did they do such a fine job on attaching the front sight to the barrel and such a lousy job everywhere else. Too many issues for that one to be even remotely correct

It’s in the letterable range, but wouldn’t even be worth checking as it is obviiously incorrect.

Hi

I agree with Mike Hunter. There is no point in discussing all the errors so the next faker knows what not to do.

The best indicator would be the muzzle diameter in spite of the obvious faults.

They have this carbine and an 1892 rifle that are both cut down to 15″ barrels if I remember.  Both were an obvious whack job.  I pointed this out to them about a year ago when I was in the store.  The guy I was talking to in the gun library told me “it has to be original, we have the clearance letter from the ATF for both guns”.  After some discussion I finally let him know that that ATF letter didnt state anything to its originality, it was just a clearance letter.  He finally said that maybe it was not original but the paperwork he had (ATF letter) indicated it was.  I told him bot were no more than a novelty or parts gun.  Some novice down the line will probably end up with it but the fact that it went from 5K to where it is priced at now is a bit funny.  After that, and coming across other guns in the past that werent right but advertised as correct, and the fact that their guns are priced with a 100%+ markup, I dont even bother to go and look through their gun library anymore.
