I read on this forum but am now unable to locate information on identifying a cut down barrel by measuring the distance from the end of the barrel to the front sight groove. This would be for an 1894 octagon barrel .32-40. Can anyone please enlighten me on how this measurement is obtained, and the normal distance? Thank you.

The other critical measurement is the distance from the muzzle to the magazine tube retaining ring.

So, what is the distance from the muzzle face to the magazine tube retaining ring pin?

I do not have the gun available to me at the moment for that measurement. The anterior site groove to barrel was only .5 inches rather than .75, and appeared to be altered at one time or another.

That indicates a shortened (cut down) barrel.
