I saw this 38-72 last summer in an auction and although I had decided to sell guns and not buy any more, I liked the looks of this gun and already had the brother in 40-72. Next I needed to shoot something with it and made that happen this fall with a mule deer…

Very cool Kirk.  Nice rifle and nice buck. Did you use your own handloads?  What bullet?

I am lucky to have Mike Venturino as a friend, as all I need to do is borrow his equipment and I don’t have to buy my own. I go to his bullet casting room and with his help, he always has a mould or two that will work.

Finding the brass is the hardest part. I put an announcement out when I got this gun and got dies and brass from someone that had them. I bought some more brass from Buffalo Arms that was extruded from 444 Marlin brass.

Once I got bullets cast and sized, I loaded them up and went out to shoot the gun. Within 3 shots I had it regulated, it was almost dead on for my reloads.

Cool.  I have some .40-72 brass that was extruded from .444 Marlin.  I vaguely recall some .38-72 and .40-72 brass made from 9.3x72R brass.  Mike V. is quite the friend to have!
