I don’t think I’ve ever seen a model 1894 first model takedown. Anybody have any idea of how many were produced?

Wow… the sheer ignorance of the seller is amazing.
“FIRST YEAR OF MANUFACTURE”… really?
“… first month of manufacture, with a four digit serial of 44XX.” How about eight months into production.
“HEXAGON” barrel… obviously he can’t count.
“38-55 WCF”… Not according to how it is marked on the barrel.
“How many TAKE DOWN rifles do you think Winchester made in the first 4500 rifles ?” OK, this might be a reasonable question to ask, but not if you do not know the real answer, and are using it as a selling point.
In answer to your question…

I have found (surveyed) 23 First variation Model 1894 Take Down rifles thus far. The actual total is undoubtedly a fair bit higher than that. If I include all of the Take Down rifles I have surveyed in the 1 – 9999 serial number range (first and second variation), the total rises to 43 thus far.
While Take Down rifles were not overly common, they cetainly were not “rare” by any stretch of the imagination. Per the ARMAX survey, a total of 276,780 Rifles were made in the first 353,999 Model 1894s manufactured, and of that total, 26,934 of them were Take Downs… that means nearly 1 in every 10 rifles was a Take Down. Based on my current survey results, there were an estimated 2,700 first variation Model 1894s made, with 93.2% of them being rifles versus carbines. If you extrapolate using the data in the ARMAX survey and the data in my survey, the estimated number of Take Down first variation rifles would be approximately 263… not a big number, but not uber rare.

I don,t know if This seller is an ffl or not but he is obviously unaware of the fact this 94 is an antique and does not need to be shipped to an ffl and can be shipped directly to someone in Canada, as it is not covered under the G.C.A.or maybe he,s just rich and arrogant enough that it doesn,t matter. Sure would like to have a 1st. mod. 94 takedown in my collection. Talking about rare, how about this one ser#159712 letters as 23″ 1/2 o.b. 1/2 mag. engraved p.g. easy pull(141/2″) checkered stock s.g.b. sporting fr. & rear sites & tang site. I believe this was the only letterable 23″ gun out of the 6 built that was engraved. I part ed with this fine Win. last year and it now lives in Texas. Henry

Not “First Year of Manufacture”. Seems like very often the most advantageous serial number data is used (Madis vs Polishing Room) by many dealers when describing the virtues of an old Winchester they are listing for sale.
