Picked this up at a recent gunshow. I know the hammer is incorrect and question the barrel. What say the experts??

S/N 858641 was manufactured in mid year 1917.  The barrel, magazine tube, rear sight, and possibly the forend stock are all replacements.  Additionally, the saddle ring & stud may not be original.

Wow so only the receiver is original .
Bert I’m not doubting you ! But can you please explain the things that tell you what’s not original ?
I know very little about original features but suspect the rear sight should be a 44A.

sorry if I sound impertinent, but I’d like to learn what I should be looking for on a rifle

I’ll take a shot at it and certain that Bert will identify anything I miss.

– Barrel address not correct.

– Barrel date is stamped 54.

– Caliber stamp should be 30 WCF not 30-30 Win

– Front sight ramp/configuration not correct.

– Saddle ring/stud not indexed correctly.

– Rear sight is 22G, should be a 44A.

– Short wood forend instead of early long wood forend.

– Finish on barrel, mag tube and forend obvious mismatch from that on receiver and butt stock.

Thanks Ted

On closer inspection of the forend it also look to have less than 100 years of use.

Original barrel would be nickel steel.

Also wondering if the rear sight and ramp are correct since it’s not the original barrel

That summed it up nicely Smile

Correct…. the barrel should be Nickel Steel.  The rear sight on the subject gun, and ramp front sight were not used with the Nickel Steel barrels, but they were standard for the Proof Steel barrels.

I bought it in Arkansas for the price of a run-of-the-mill shooter which as it turns out it is.  One of these days I’m going to pick up one that is correct.IMG_2638-1.JPGImage Enlarger
