I need help with 1894 takedown rifle made in 1900 ,26″ octagon barrel nice wood and good original finish.
seller wants $1350 Otd is that a fair price? Also rear sight is a marble not sure if it’s correct for this rifle? posted pics see below link.
The photos are so large on my screen, it is difficult to gauge what the rifle looks like.
The metal seems to be in great shape–few dings, sharp lines, good finish. But it doesn’t seem to match the condition of the wood. The wood says that rifle has been out and about…someone carried it quite a bit. The metal doesn’t show this.
Also, with the wear on the wood from use, why is there no loss of bluing on the magazine tube where it passes through the band? Maybe the users didn’t take it down?
I hope I’m wrong…the takedown connection seems to not be right. That groove is prominent. None of our family’s takedowns are that way.
Is it an optical illusion, or has the front of the bolt been abused…pried on?
I’m hoping you get opinions from others here who are more adept at assessing from photos.
If I am incorrect in my observations, 1350 is a good price for the buyer. If the bore is good, the action dandy, and no one has been prying on the bolt, it seems a good price for a hunting rifle.
Edit: Whoops! Are those vice jaw marks on the takedown collar?
A crack on the left side of the forearm?
—You should just scrap my opinions…I really can’t see the rifle well in the photos.—
Good news / Bad news. Well, really not bad.
Good: The pix came across well. Lot of detail. FTW, likely those bloated pix the adjustment in your computer. Occasionally I have the same problem but ‘usually’ messing around a few moments, solves.
The not ‘bad’. I think the rifle looks good… That said, I’m not a 94 collector and really no judge with any expertise. FTW may suffer from computer ‘big picture’, but his comments also suggest “big picture” expertise I clearly lack! I also don’t know prices, but from what I see & your bore condition comment, I like it at such price.
Apologies for lack of expertise! May I suggest a couple of whole rifle pix if convenient.
Best of luck! 🙂

If I were you I would join the Cody Firearms Museum. Most of the cost is tax deductible. Then get them to do a work sheet on the gun. The guns looks good to me. If the takedown barrel was used they cleaned the band before twisting the tube. I see slight wear. The stock is definitely nicer than the standard wood. Because of the takedown and the wood the letter should mention the takedown and maybe the wood. If the Marbles sight bothers you it can be replaced.
Now I have a solid stance:
Do not purchase this rifle. Use the money and a bit more to bring home a for-certain nice 1894 Takedown, Octagon, Crescent Butt, Correct sights, No Cracks, No abused metal.
If you are looking, it shouldn’t take you too long to find a good one you would be happy to carry and to hunt with for under $2000.
