I do not believe that I have seen a Model 1886 ELW with anything except a full round barrel.Bert
My memory just got jogged. On the cover of the Fall, 2020 WACA magazine there is featured a .38-70 Extra Light with an octagon barrel. At about the end of the magazine there is a one page article on the lightweight/ELW’s. Of relevance, the article mentions the existence (from the factory records) of a .38-56 ELW with a half octagon barrel. Of great interest to me is the notation of 50-100, 50-110 and 50-100-450 in the ledgers as lightweights/ELW’s. And of greatest curiosity/intrigue is the recording of a M1886 ELW in .22. Likely a recording error but that is just speculation.

Boy I hope those big 50’s had a shotgun but! I know from personal experience that an ELW in 45-90 kicks like a mule!

Maybe the solution is just be sure you are shooting something big enough (and close enough) that recoil is the last thing on your mind

No truer statement made there Steve! but I never complain about a 45-90 either!
this thread has made me think I am glad I have it. In all honesty I was some what remorseful of buying it and planned on using it for trade bait. But after this and also talking to a couple other 86 enthusiasts I am not so regretful now.
My next adventure is to find an ELW in 33wcf, my other favorite caliber!
